Artist statement:
The sculpture reflects themes of mystery, isolation, and decision. My goal for this box was to express the idea of redirection and being the caption of your own life. The outside of the box is supposed to appear strange and unknown with the color white representing the ability to do anything. The multiple doors are to fully show the concept of redirection with the actual opening being unclear and unexpected. Lastly the objects themselves are reminiscent of children's building blocks, this is to say that life doesn't truly evolve to something so unrecognized from youth, the basics remain the same. Yet a lot can happen with each block representing different challenges. Red triangle - Risk/Danger, Blue square - Limited Time, Yellow ball - "life gives you lemons" / "what you do with what you have", Green star - Great Luck, sometimes we just get really lucky in life.

Notes:
Movie - The Life of Walter Mitty
Reflections - Trust the process, I really figured it out as I went. Had a rough idea but just went right into building. I used materials and building methods I enjoyed from previous projects, like the "skin" method with tracing paper, water, and glue.

Reflection Statement:
The sculptures all together visually communicate the feelings associated with Gregor's room in Franz Kafka's the metamorphosis. While exploring the materials to build the sculptures I wanted to focus on the texture and color because that best expresses the emotions of Gregor. I decided to include some warmer colors like pink and purple to give some contrast to the browns and greens, this ended up making the perfect muddy colors. When I felt the work was laking I kept adding color and pushing the piece farther so it wouldn't come off as flat. I want to keep exploring paper based sculptures and I want to keep learning more about unique building methods. This piece allowed me to explore working with limited materials, since we could only use paper. The making of this work exposed me to new ideas such as taking inspiration loosely from a story and applying it to sculpture.

The three sculptures visually communicate innovation, trusting the process, and redirection. While exploring the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on creativity because interesting designs are important in my creative journey. Thats why I decided to add unique elements. When I felt the work was laking I ended up adding the orange wood to the negative space sculpture and weaving to the back of the repetition sculpture. I want to keep exploring experimental techniques and I want to learn more about sculpture as an art practice in totally. These pieces allowed me to explore material I would have otherwise never used. The making of this work exposed new ideas like strange color palettes and how to connect multiple pieces even if they are very different.
